Character Over The Gift or The Blessing: Why Christlikeness Is Greater Than Any Gift or Blessing

Let’s go ahead and jump into another not-so-popular topic. One that doesn’t get much applause in this blessing-chasing, highlight-reel, “look what I got” kind of culture we live in.

Character vs. the Gift. Character vs. the Blessing.

Yep. We’re going there.

Yeah, I know—we love a good testimony, a good “God just blessed me with…” moment.

We live in a world where people are more obsessed with getting something from God than becoming someone like Christ.

  • We want the hand of God without seeking His heart.

  • We want the gift but don’t want to be groomed.

  • We’ll run laps for a blessing but won’t sit still long enough for God to prune our character.

  • We want the miracle, but not the molding.

ME - I want soft life - God - You need to be PRUNED

But here’s the raw truth: God is more interested in building your character than handing you a blessing.

Disclaimer: Your purpose on earth isn’t to be rich, popular, or collect blessings like trophies—it’s to look more like Christ. He is the blueprint . The model. The standard. (Side note: That’s why we read our Bibles—because you can’t walk like Jesus if you don’t know how He walked.)

Jesus Was All About Character: He  Cares More About Who You’re Becoming Than What You’re Receiving

When you study the life and teachings of Jesus, you’ll notice something: He was all about character development. He called out the Pharisees—not because they lacked knowledge or power—but because their character was trash. Jesus wasn’t impressed by their public displays or religious routines. They knew scripture, performed religious duties, but their hearts? Far from God. They loved the platform more than the posture of humility. Sound familiar?

Fruits Over Flesh: The Holy Spirit’s Blueprint

Paul didn’t just drop the fruits of the Spirit in Galatians 5:22-23 for poetic flair—these are God’s character goals for us:

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.”

These aren’t just feel-good virtues. These are characters we must imitate . These are Christ-like qualities God is actively trying to grow in us.

Love, for example, isn’t just a feeling. If you love your spouse, you don’t just follow the “rules” of marriage—you delight in honoring them. It flows naturally, not legalistically. Same with God. When love is at the core, obedience isn’t a burden. It’s joy.

The Two Most Important Commandments!

You Can Get the Blessing—But Can You Keep It? Blessings Without Character? Dangerous.

Here’s the hard truth: God can bless you with a gift, but if your character isn’t built to sustain it—you’ll lose it.

Let’s get practical. Say God blesses you with a marriage. That’s beautiful. But if you haven’t developed love, patience, kindness, gentleness, self-control—guess what? that blessing can turn into a battleground real quick. You might sabotage that very blessing.

A lot of people walk into marriage with unpruned character, and a mouth that always has to have the last word. That’s not spicy—that’s immaturity. We see pettiness worn like a badge of honor, when it’s really a flashing sign of the flesh. Petty pride leads to pointless fights. We need to stop celebrating dysfunction and start praying for transformation.  God uses marriage, friendships, and community to prune us—teaching us self-control, mercy, and how to love like Him.

Pettiness isn’t a personality trait to wear like a crown—it’s a work of the flesh, and it gives more glory to the enemy than it ever will to God.

The Beatitudes: Christlike Character Leads To Rewards

Jesus laid out heaven’s value system loud and clear in Matthew 5:

  • Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.

  • Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.

  • Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.

  • Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

Translation: Godly character leads to reward. It may not always be financial,  flashy or  come with a cash prize. Sometimes it’s not tangible—but it’s always transformational. Godly character brings rewards in the following ways .

  • Influence: “Can we find anyone like this man, one in whom is the spirit of God?… You shall be in charge of my palace, and all my people are to submit to your orders.” Genesis 41:38-40

  • Eternity: “Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you life as your victor’s crown.” Rev 2:10

  • Favor. “Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man.” Proverbs 3:3-4

  • Grace: “Therefore He says: ‘God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” James 4:6

  • Legacy: “A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold “Proverbs 22:1

Love > Gifts (Every Time)

Paul drops the mic in 1 Corinthians 13:

“If I speak in the tongues of men or angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong… If I have prophetic powers, understand mysteries, have mountain-moving faith, but have not love—I am nothing.”

Nothing. Zilch. Nada.

Your gift can wow a crowd, but love, the root of godly character, impresses heaven.

You can be gifted. You can be anointed. You can be “called.” But without godly character—without love—you’re just noise.

Gifts can impress, but character sustains.

Why Character Before The Gift or Blessing

Listen, I’m not saying God doesn’t want to bless you—He absolutely does. But He loves you too much to let the blessing come before the building. A blessing without the character to carry it is a setup for self-destruction.

You can be “successful” in the eyes of the world and still be spiritually bankrupt. We’ve got people with massive platforms, booming businesses, and viral moments who are spiritually empty. They’ve got the gift, but no godly character to keep it.

But a person molded in the image of Christ? Now that’s gold refined by fire.

Success in God’s Kingdom isn’t measured by followers, finances, or fame.

True success = Becoming more like Jesus.

That’s why He said in Matthew 6:33,

Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

The Takeaway

God loves you too much to just hand you blessings without first building you for them.

He’s not being mean. He’s being loving.

He’s preparing you not just to receive—but to sustain, steward, and reflect His glory in every blessing He places in your life.

So stop chasing gifts.

Stop idolizing blessings.

And start praying:

“Lord, prune my heart. Shape my character. Make me more like You.”

Because when you start looking like Christ, everything else will follow.

Final Word:

At the end of the day, your greatest success is not what you gained—but who you became.

Your character is what makes you golden in heaven’s eyes.
