Entertainment Transformation: The Transformation Missing Today in Our Walk With God
When I fully surrendered my life to God, every area got attacked. 😂
My clothes.
My food.
My friendships.
My environment.
My language.
And let’s not forget…
ENTERTAINMENT.
Everything had to go through transformation.
But I think entertainment is one of the areas Christians struggle to take seriously because we don't always see what we're watching or listening to as sin.
We see it as a weight.
“It's not technically a sin.”
Okay…but a weight can eventually lead you into sin.
And even when the weight itself never becomes sinful, it can still become heavy enough to pull your heart away from God.
Hebrews 12:1 tells us to lay aside “every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us.”
Notice Scripture distinguishes between the two.
Every weight AND sin.
Meaning something doesn't necessarily have to be sinful for you to need to put it down.
That's important.
Because we spend so much time asking:
“But is it a sin?”
When sometimes the better question is:
“What is this doing to my heart?”
Because a weight entertained long enough can become a doorway to sin.
And even if it never does, if it's pulling your affection, attention, hunger, and time away from God, why are you fighting so hard to keep it?
That is where entertainment becomes serious.
Let’s go back to the foundation
I believe one major reason we aren't seeing enough truly transformed believers today has a lot to do with what is being taught.
We preach the blood of Jesus, and absolutely should. The blood deals with our sin. But the cross deals with self.
Jesus didn't just call us to receive forgiveness. He called us to deny ourselves, take up our cross, and follow Him (Luke 9:23).
The cross is where my way dies.
My desires.
My preferences.
My old lifestyle.
When that message is missing, we get mixture.
Transformation in some areas while other areas remain completely untouched.
You're speaking in tongues one minute and cursing somebody out the next.
From the same mouth??? What's going on? 😂
Some people have been believers for 10, 15, even 20 years and are still stuck in the same cycles.
Why?
Certain areas were never truly surrendered—and entertainment is a BIG one. Let’s talk about it…
Your Entertainment Might Be Feeding What You're Trying to Kill
“I'm a Christian now. I don't hang around my old friends anymore.”
Great.
But you're still watching sexually explicit shows.
Then afterward, you struggle with lust and masturbation.
Sometimes we're praying against something while continuing to consume the very thing feeding it.
We don't always recognize that our entertainment is the trigger keeping certain desires alive.
Jesus said:
“The eye is the lamp of the body.” — Matthew 6:22
You cannot constantly feed your eyes darkness and expect your inner life to remain untouched.
You cannot continuously feed your flesh and then wonder why your spirit feels weak.
It doesn't work like that.
The Enemy's Underestimated Weapon: Entertainment
I believe entertainment is one of the enemy's most underestimated weapons because it works on believers and unbelievers so WELL.
And there is a biblical strategy that reminds me of how this works.
Balaam.
Revelation 2:14 says Balaam taught Balak how to put a stumbling block before Israel, leading them into idolatry and sexual immorality.
That caught my attention.
Because Balaam couldn't simply curse the people God had blessed.
So another strategy was used: Get them to compromise and out of alignment.
If you can't destroy someone from the outside, get them out of alignment from within.
Balaam gave the counsel, but notice how the trap came: indirectly, through temptation.
Balaam couldn’t curse Israel directly, so the strategy shifted. The Moabite women became the temptation, but Israel still had a choice. The men slept with the women.
And this is important: Israel got themselves out of alignment with God through their own compromise. Balaam created the idea, but he didn’t make them sin . He just knew what could possibly bring them out of alignment…
That strategy is still worth paying attention to.
The enemy doesn't always need to come screaming: “GO SIN!”
Sometimes he just needs to make sin “entertaining”.
Put it in a song.
Put it in a movie.
Put it in a series.
Put it in a music video.
Make you laugh at it.
Make you sing it.
Make you binge-watch it.
Make it normal.
And eventually, something you once recognized as darkness doesn't bother you anymore.
That's the danger.
Entertainment Is Teaching You Something
Entertainment isn't just entertaining you.
It can shape your: Perspective. Values. Desires. Ideology. Emotional responses. Worldview.
Some of us may never struggle with what we consider the “big sins.”
But the enemy doesn't always need some dramatic sin to tempt us.
Sometimes he just needs screen time.
I know this personally.
Growing up, I consumed massive amounts of VH1, MTV and—my Africans know this one 😂—Channel O.
Music videos. Celebrity culture. Clubbing. Sexualized content. Wild living.
Watch enough of that and it starts becoming normal.
Then normal becomes desirable. Then desirable starts influencing behavior. This is the story of how I grew up too fast (story for another blog)......
The Truth. Seeds were being planted.
That's why entertainment is so subtle.
It sneaks in and slowly starts steering the heart.
And once it starts steering your heart, something else can happen:
You suddenly don't have time to pray.
Don't have time to read your Bible.
But somehow had three hours to finish the series.
Hmm.
Entertainment can become both a heart-steerer and a time-consumer.
So What Should Christians Watch?
I'm not saying every movie is demonic. 😂
I'm not saying all documentaries are bad.
And please…watch your sports game LOL.
Philippians 4:8 gives us an incredible filter:
Whatever is true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent and worthy of praise—think on these things.
That's a filter.
Because entertainment isn't neutral.
What you repeatedly watch and listen to can influence your thoughts, desires, convictions and eventually your behavior.
So be intentional.
One question I personally think is helpful is:
If Jesus were sitting right beside me, would I still watch this with Him? Would I still play this song?
Because Christianity doesn't stop when nobody else is watching.
You don't get to tell Jesus:
“Stay here. I'll be back after this episode.” 😂
He is Lord there too.
Run From What Feeds the Flesh
Paul tells Timothy:
“Run from anything that stimulates youthful lusts. Instead, pursue righteous living, faithfulness, love, and peace.” — 2 Timothy 2:22
Notice the language:
RUN.
Not manage it.
Not keep watching and pray you somehow become immune.
Run.
If something repeatedly stimulates lust, anger, pride, rebellion, sexual immorality, envy, or another area you're trying to put to death, why keep feeding yourself with it?
And this is where entertainment transformation comes in.
True transformation doesn’t stop at your friendship groups—it reaches your Netflix history and Spotify playlist too. And Apple Music… booooo 😂 lol.
Because when Jesus becomes Lord, we don't get to keep certain rooms of our lives under our own lordship.
So maybe the question isn't only:
“Is watching this a sin?”
Maybe we need to start asking:
“What is this producing in me?”
Is it feeding what God is killing?
Is it normalizing what God calls sin?
Is it steering my heart away from Him?
Is it consuming my time?
Is it helping me become more like Christ—or keeping the old me alive?
Because not everything that entertains you strengthens you.
Some things are keeping alive the very person the cross is trying to kill.
Let the transformation reach your entertainment too.
